Ferenc Molnár was already a successful playwright in 1909 when Liliom opened in Budapest. It flopped. Audiences didn’t understand this gritty and almost nihilistic tale of a carnival barker and a poor servant girl, whose love is ill-fated almost from the start. In the years following the First World War, the play became popular. An English translation played on Broadway in 1921. There were also a number of films made of Liliom. It was adapted into the Broadway stage musical Carousel in 1945 by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (with a film version released in 1956).
