Mahler was one the leading symphony and opera conductors of the late 19th and early 20th century. Indeed, he was more acclaimed as a conductor than as a composer. His last stand at the podium was with the New York Philharmonic on February 20, 1911. Mahler suffered from a severe fever at the time. Several days later, he was diagnosed with an incurable heart infection. Hoping to recover, he returned with Alma to Vienna and died on May 18. Mahler in New York, discussed by Gilbert Kaplan.
